The New Pegasus Project
The New Pegasus Project arrises out of an impulse of finding active ways to engage with screens and starting conversation around the presence of screens and media in our modern world. With four unique new instruments designed by Nathaniel Williams - Light Horses - light, shapes and colors are created in real time on a screen by four Light Horse Players.
Accompanied by an ensemble of professional singers led by Jakob Bergsma, a unique art form arises in which colors and sounds will be experienced in a new and unique way.
Reflections from previous participants:
"The moment I start working with the light instruments it's as if my perception and my action start interacting and almost intertwine. It's so mesmerizing as the viewer to just be absorbed by colors that seem like beings and as the artist to feel the changes in the room that come with the play of the light."
The light projection is very special. Also, how the colors blend and the atmosphere it creates for both the artists and the spectators. As a young person, it is very interesting to work on a screen that isn't digital.
I found this amazing"
Workshops
Screen Art
Nathaniel Williams
Is an artist, scholar and leader of the Youth Section at the Goetheanum. He has worked in community based art projects with young people for years, in the USA and internationally.
Workshop
This workshop will introduce select live instruments that were developed over the last century, including Light Horses that have been designed for the New Pegasus Project. The workshop will culminate in a design challenge where all youngsters will create their own light instrument ideas.
Electronic Waste and Design
Frank Stiksma
Is a Dutch right-to-repair activist and electronic waste expert who works at Saxion University of Applied Sciences and the University of Twente.
He looks at how many electronic products-like smartphones, laptops, and vacuum cleaners-we throw away every day. Frank is shocked by how much waste this creates. His research focuses on the Circular Economy, which is all about giving products a longer life and making repair and reuse the new normal.
Workshop
In this workshop, we'll dive into the world of electronic devices and explore how repairable they really are. By working hands-on with real products, we'll actively investigate what makes repairing them difficult and what keeps our throwaway culture alive. From these insights, we'll explore how we can break out of the existing vicious circle. Well discuss possible solutions, such as promoting repair-friendly product design and building repair communities.
Together, well explore how these ideas can help create a future where repairing and reusing consumer electronics become part of everyday life.
Contact and Bookings
We will visit schools, youth centers and other places with young people in a 100km radius around Basel, Switzerland.
Workshops can take place during the day for groups of 15 to 40 young people between 15- and
20-years-old. Workshops will take place March 16-20.
Many more evenings in March are available for arranging live performances with Choir and Lighthorses. There are minimal technical requirements in order for you to host a performance; a room that can be darkened, where a projection screen can be hung and with enough space for an audience.
We suggest a financial contribution of 800CHF for the workshop visits. This will allow us to cover expenses for our future sessions with young people. The performances will be open donation events.
