Youth Initiative Africa: The Future of Anthroposophy on the African Continent
Youth Initiative Africa was founded in 2024 during the youth workshop at one of the All- Africa Anthroposophic Trainings (AAAT) in Botswana. African youth felt the need to host a youth-led conference that would deepen their understanding of anthroposophy, not only as Africans but also as young people. The idea of creating a Pan-African youth movement arose from the small number of anthroposophists in individual African countries, making it important to connect, learn, and grow together across the continent.
In September 2025, this vision came to life when Youth Initiative Africa hosted the first-ever Gift of Africa Conference in Vikindu, Tanzania. Vikindu was chosen as the venue because Youth Initiative Africa began as Youth Group Tanzania, founded by four young women who are Waldorf alumni from Hekima Waldorf School. Holding the first conference there honoured the roots of the movement. Vikindu became the place where a small seed was planted with the intention that it would grow into a truly Pan-African initiative.
The conference was named Gift of Africa to encourage African youth to explore anthroposophy through the lens of African culture and heritage. Rather than seeing anthroposophy as something foreign, participants were invited to recognize the wisdom, spirituality, and community values that have always existed within African societies and to discover how these resonate with anthroposophical principles.
During the conference, participants explored the concepts of Utu and Ubuntu, African philosophies that emphasize our shared humanity and interconnectedness. Both express the understanding that “I am because we are,” reminding us that a person’s humanity is formed and strengthened through relationships, compassion, dignity, and mutual responsibility within the community. These conversations highlighted the enduring strength of community life across Africa and inspired participants to continue exploring the relationship between African culture and anthroposophy. It became clear that there was much more to discover, leading to the decision to host another Gift of Africa Conference.
From 21st to 25th September 2026, Youth Initiative Africa will host the second Gift Of Africa Conference in Kitale, Kenya, under the theme “Deepening Our Anthroposophical Journey in Africa.” This theme reflects the desire not only to study anthroposophy but also to root it more deeply within African realities, cultures, and ways of knowing.
Together, participants will study Rudolf Steiner’s How to Know Higher Worlds, exploring how the path of inner development can be understood alongside African spiritual traditions. They will also examine anthroposophical medicine, with a focus on using resources that are readily available within African communities, making healing practices more accessible and locally relevant. Another important area of exploration will be the Africanisation of Waldorf education, seeking ways to make Waldorf pedagogy more meaningful and relatable to African children by drawing upon local stories, languages, history, arts, and cultural traditions. Through these conversations, Youth Initiative Africa hopes to contribute to an anthroposophy that is deeply rooted in African soil while remaining true to its universal spiritual foundations.
The conference will bring together more than 100 young people from across the continent to learn from one another, celebrate the unique gifts of their individual countries, and continue building a vibrant Pan-African community dedicated to the future of anthroposophy in Africa.
